The Iguanas had so much fun on crazy cooking day, we decided to make it crazy cooking week! What a great way to end the summer….take a look!
We read a wonderful book, Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun, and were inspired to make this wacky dish. Some of the Iguanas were skeptical at first, but all in all they loved it!
1. Cook spaghetti noodles
2. Add your favorite sauce
3. Scoop into a hot dog bun & enjoy being a little different.
In honor of this story, we tried something new in our sensory tub…rainbow spaghetti noodles. To color the pasta we just added 3 cups of oil to the boiling water. Afterwards we divided the noodles into bowls & added food colorings. The Iguanas had a blast cutting, twirling & scooping the colorful pasta.
One day, we made edible paint by adding food coloring to a little bit of milk. We used our edible paint to turn marshmallows into works of art….and of course we ate them later! 🙂
Ice sculptures…this never gets old!
Foil art…
Miss Rachel taught us how to make pinwheels!
The craziest thing we cooked this week was “mock apple pie.” It almost seemed like magic that we could make crackers taste like apple.
Ingredients:
2 cups sugar
Zest and 2 Tbsp. juice from 1 lemon
1 pkg. (14.1 oz.) ready-to-use refrigerated pie crust (2 crusts)
36 RITZ Crackers, coarsely broken (about 1-3/4 cups)
2 Tbsp. butter or margarine, cut into small pieces
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
MIX sugar and cream of tartar in medium saucepan. Gradually stir in water. Bring to boil on high heat; simmer on low heat 5 min. or until mixture is reduced to 1-1/2 cups. Stir in zest and juice; cool 30 min.
HEAT oven to 425°F. Roll out 1 crust on lightly floured surface to 11-inch circle; place in 9-inch pie plate. Place cracker crumbs in crust. Pour sugar syrup over crumbs; top with butter and cinnamon.
ROLL out remaining crust to 10-inch circle; place over pie. Seal and flute edge. Cut several slits in top crust to permit steam to escape.
BAKE 30 to 35 min. or until golden brown. Cool.
Here we are smashin ritz crackers for the pie filling…
This has been an amazing summer in the Iguanas class and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for letting us spend time with your kiddos this year. See you next summer!
