The boys worked their entire play time building the roads and then adding houses and blocks for the cars to drive around.  It started out as a simple idea

from one child and soon many were adding to the project making it big and complex.  The first little guy with the idea, never refused help and welcomed all ideas.  That sense of welcomeness caught on.  For the most part, there was little collaboration, though it was very clear that everyone was working toward “the” common goal – a long road full of obstacles.

The long, long road project is an excellent example of children bouncing back and forth between parallel play and cooperative play.  As we look at developmental stages of children, transitioning from parallel to cooperative play is a crucial developmental step.  It opens brand new doors for children, not only in their play during childhood, but it is an absolutely neccessary life skill.   Today’s long, long road project proves these young children are bridging the gap between parallel and cooperative play.  Mom and Dads – your precious little boys are growing up!
