Spiders were the focus for a time in the Chickadee class. We “spun” our own webs, danced to a spider song, and enjoyed several spider finger plays, including the “Eency, Weensy Spider” and “There’s a spider on the floor.”
Salad Spinner Spider Webs–
Using a salad spinner, the kids “spun” their own webs. It took some muscle and concentration to get it spinning.

Spin, Spider, Spin–
The kids love to use the ribbons to dance with while we are in the gym. Usually its random movement to songs. This time, though, I had the kids move to the song, “Spin, Spider, Spin. We made circles in the air, spun our bodies, and swayed to the music, as we pretended to be spiders spinning our webs.
Movement and dance are so beneficial to kids. Both stimulate the brain–making neural-connections that are essential for future learning. Both also encourage imagination and creativity. The eensy weensy spider crawled up the loft-space–
One Friday morning, I cut out spiders for the kids and added a ribbon for them to hold on to. Soon after, they figured out that they could go up to the loft and have their spiders dangle over the edge. And soon after that, many of them started to sing the “Eensy, Weensy Spider” as they pulled their spiders up and down.
