New Year’s Resolutions are often motivated by the states of being and people we hold nearest and dearest, including our health and our families. As 2015 gains steam, you may be working on adapting choices that you made on January 1 to your real life, trying to balance idealistic principles with the rigors of each day.
If maintaining the health and well-being of your family is important to you, the following the tips can help you strike a healthy balance in terms of food, fitness, and rest.
Limit – Or Even Eliminate – Sugar
Informed kids are more likely to be healthy kids – and adults. Teach your children about the dangers of too much sugar consumption, including dental and mood issues and even chronic illness. Next, consider limiting soda and other sugary snack intake to one day on the weekend, and keeping consumption moderate on that day. Some families consider doing away with sugar altogether, which can be a radical and transformational change. If you do undertake this kind of endeavor, begin slowly and work with any negative feedback from your children as it comes.
For a moderate approach that limits sugar on most days, the weekend schedule can substantially cut down on toxic sugar intake. Your children won’t feel deprived (at least not once they adjust to this way of eating) and will experience stabilized blood sugar levels and reduced sugar cravings, as well as more “room” for healthy foods in their diets. Teaching your children moderation with sugar intake helps them learn moderation in all areas of life, a valuable lesson that will serve them well for years to come.
Get Involved with Sports as a Family
Showing your children how to stay active can be one of the best gifts you ever give them. Look for sports and extracurricular activities in your area that might be enjoyable for your kids, and help them make new friends.
At Kidspace Child Enrichment Center, we encourage children to get active through a variety of methods. Our gym space is the most popular area in our facility and includes a boat, basketball area, and creative play space in which kids can build muscle and enjoy social interactions.
Cook Healthy Meals at Home
There’s no better way to control what goes into the mouths of your children than to make food that you approve of, at home. In addition, getting your children involved in cooking is an excellent way to spend quality time and teach them valuable skills that can be used for a lifetime. Consider cooking meals that include protein, vegetables, and whole-grain carbohydrates, as well as moderate amounts of dairy and healthy fats, to ensure their nutritional needs are met. Our staff at Kidspace Child Enrichment Center is always happy to give your kids whatever healthy snacks you bring in for them from home. We’re delighted to work with parents to support the health and happiness of the children we are lucky enough to instruct each day.
Taking care of your family’s health is a full-time job. To promote good health and well-being this year, consider undertaking the above steps to keep your family active and well. Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have about our facility and practices. We’re here to help!
