ROBINS – Frog Legs

 November 30th, 2012
Today we began our morning circle learning all about frogs!
We discovered there are nine types of frogs that live in Washington.   Frogs have teeth, and long legs that help them jump very high.  We also compared frogs to toads.  Frogs are smaller than toads and they live mostly in water .  Toads  live mostly on land.

However, the most exciting news we learned about frogs is that their legs are considered a delicacy.
Today, we’re going to learn how to cook frog legs and then eat them!

Step #1 –  dip the frog legs in butter

Step #2 –  coat the frog legs with flour and bread crumbs (twice)

Step #3 -Place the frog legs in a pan with hot oil and fry until golden brown

Here are the finished legs, all hot and brown and ready to eat.

All the children, except two, were adventurous enough to try the frog legs.
Most of the children enjoyed them and a few of them asked for seconds.

In reflection we, teachers realized our excitement to cook and eat frog legs was contagious and transferred to the children’s willingness to taste and eat the frog legs.
Children will get excited about food, when we adults are excited too.  The excitement builds when we take the time to invite the children into the kitchen and include them in the preparation process.

Try it at home . . . that’s where tomorrow’s culinary experts are born!

Happy Cooking!
