ROBINS – Poached Pears

It’s Friday and that means . . . COOKING DAY!
Miss Julie has a pear tree at her house and the pears are ready for the picking.  The cooking challenge this week was to find a recipe using pears.

                                             POACHED PEARS WITH ORANGE JUICE
                                                              4 firm pears
                                                              1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
                                                              1/4 cup water

The first step was making the orange juice.  The kiddos had a great time squeezing the oranges.  Not only is fresh orange juice – super yummy, but squeezing the oranges helps the children strengthen those hand muscles . . . so important for writing skills.
The best cooks, taste along the way.
Some of our cooks followed suit . . . tasting the orange juice before putting it in the pot.

After the pears were peeled and cored, they were cut in quarters and placed in a saucepan.  In the saucepan,  we added  the sugar, orange juice, and water and heated it all over medium heat.  It all came to a boil then we reduced the heat to low, covered the pot, and continued simmering for another 15 minutes.  We knew the pears were done because they were tender.

Poached pears in orange juice . . . what did the Robin’s think?
It was a unanimous decision  . . .
TWO THUMBS UP!

Until next week . . . happy cooking!    Miss Julie and Miss Crystal
